Augrabies was known as Aukoerabis, the Place of Great Noise, name by the early Khoi people – and when you visit the Augrabies Falls, particularly in the summer, you will too experience the thundering noise the water makes. The Augrabies Falls National Park is home to this mighty waterfall. The Orange River crashes over smooth granite terraces of the canyon plunging 190 metres in a dramatic multi stream waterfall, making it South Africa’s largest in terms of volume waterfall. During its course it thunders through an 18 kilometer-long gorge carved into the rock over a period of 500 million years. The Augrabies Falls National Park itself extends across 88 000 hectares of arid wilderness. Striking in its arid lunar landscapes it makes for a very interesting destination to explore. Plants include an incredible number of succulent species and hikes through the park allow the visitors to experience the vegetation and scenic spots up close. The walks vary in length from 1 hour to a few days, there is also mountain biking, canoe and 4X4 eco trails. For those a little more daring there is also the Black Rhino Adventure Trail. The rest camp has swimming pools, a restaurant, shop, pub and grill. Accommodation includes self-catering chalets, cottages and bungalows. There are also pretty shaded caravan and camping sites. Day visitors are welcome to use the main restaurant facilities or make use of the picnic spot near reception. |
